đ Many Small Strings Make a Great River: Reflections on HR Automation and the Hailey HR Platform
I recently came across a saying during a webinar hosted by Deborah RosĂŠn and Simon Tsolakidis of Hаiley HR on October 30: âMany small strings make a great river.â It struck a chord. In the context of HR automation, this metaphor beautifully captures how incremental efficiencies can lead to transformative impact.
The webinar offered an insightful introduction to the Hailey HR automation system, prompting me to reflect more broadly on the role of automation in HR today. Although Iâm not an HR tech specialist, I approach platforms like Hailey with an objective lens.
âď¸ Why HR Automation Matters?
In our era of rapid technological advancement and AI integration, HR automation is no longer a noveltyâitâs a necessity. Automating repetitive tasks not only enhances HR efficiency but also improves the experience for employees and candidates alike. Itâs about consistency, clarity, and freeing up time for strategic work.
Yet many organizations face a dilemma: Which HR platform is the right fit?
As Josh Bersin aptly puts it, âCompanies are throwing money at HR tools right now⌠as they search for ways to transform their workforces, make people more productive, and improve quality of hire, skills development, and employee engagement and retention.â
đ¸ The C-Suite Conundrum
While HR teams often champion automation, CEOs tend to focus on cost reduction and ROI. Even with clear criteria and budgets, decisions can be swayed by peer influenceââIf Company X uses this platform, maybe we should too.â
But fiscal prudence must be balanced with strategic foresight. Some reports suggest companies operate with up to 11 core HR systems, spanning recruitment, learning, payroll, and more. The cost per employee can quickly become unsustainable.
To ensure meaningful ROI, Bersin recommends:
- Clarify the problems you want to solve upfront
- Focus on the employee experienceâincluding the C-Suite
- Partner closely with IT and senior business leaders
- Establish a senior governance team to oversee HR tech strategy
đ§ What the Hailey Report Reveals
The Haileyâs recent report, based on a survey of 200 Swedish companies, highlights key pain points:
- 31% want to focus on strategic workâtranslating business goals into people strategies
- 25% prioritize competenciesâdeveloping leaders and retaining talent
- 48% cite lack of time as a barrier to HR impact
- 33% identify HR admin as the biggest timewaster
Automation, then, isnât just a toolâitâs a gateway to strategic transformation. The time freed thanks to automation can be used for communication, implementation and follow-up. As Simon Tsolakidis of Hailey HR noted during the webinar: We can have beautiful processes, but if we donât have time to follow up on them, it doesnât matter.â
Deborah Rosen added that automation enables HR to focus on engagement, talent attraction, and retentionâthe pillars of a thriving workforce.
